Egypt has a way of making it onto almost every traveler’s bucket list.
The pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor, the Nile River, the markets of Cairo, and the beaches of the Red Sea all offer very different experiences.
But there’s one question worth asking before booking your trip:
When is the best time to visit Egypt?
The short answer is: October to April is generally the most comfortable period for exploring Egypt, particularly if your trip includes Cairo, the pyramids, Luxor, Aswan, and other outdoor attractions. Egypt is a year round destination, but summer can be extremely hot, especially in the south.
If your main goal is sightseeing, cultural experiences, and exploring Egypt’s ancient landmarks, the cooler months are a great choice.
During this period, temperatures are generally more comfortable for spending long hours outdoors. This is particularly useful when visiting places such as the Pyramids of Giza, Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, and other archaeological sites.
Egypt’s official tourism information describes winter, roughly November to April, as mild, while the southern regions remain warm.
For travelers who don't enjoy intense heat, these months can be especially appealing.
Cairo tends to have mild daytime temperatures, while evenings can become cooler. In Luxor and Aswan, winter is generally warm and sunny, making it a popular period for exploring the Nile Valley.
Just remember to pack layers, particularly if you're traveling early in the morning or spending evenings outdoors.
Spring can offer a nice balance between comfortable sightseeing weather and warmer days.
It's also a good period to explore Egypt beyond Cairo, especially if your itinerary includes Luxor, Aswan, or a Nile cruise.
You can absolutely visit Egypt during summer.
However, expect much hotter conditions, particularly in southern Egypt. June, July, and August are among the hottest months, with temperatures in the south sometimes exceeding 40°C.
If you're traveling during this period, your itinerary should take the heat into consideration, especially when planning outdoor sightseeing.
The good news is that Egypt's coastal destinations, including parts of the Red Sea, can still offer enjoyable beach and water experiences throughout the year.
If you're planning your first Egypt trip, we'd recommend considering October to April for a comfortable mix of sightseeing, history, culture, and exploration.
But ultimately, the best time depends on what you want from your trip.
